Being confined to the house has led to a surge in demand for DIY beauty treatments. While we once relied on professionals for transformative procedures, a host of skincare tools and products offer the chance to discover radiant skin from the comfort of our own homes.
So, how to get visible results without visiting the clinic? Dr Amiee Vyas, an aesthetic doctor based in London’s Mayfair, shares her advice for A-grade at-home pampering.
THE SMOOTHING LED DEVICE
Light therapy can effectively treat a multitude of skin concerns, but the results are cumulative, meaning you won’t see long-term benefits from the occasional salon trip. When regular appointments aren’t an option, an at-home device is an excellent alternative.
“LED devices have the look and feel of a clinical treatment and, depending on the type of light, regular use can help smooth fine lines and wrinkles, improve pigmentation and reduce acne-causing bacteria,” says Vyas. “When looking for a device, it’s important to ensure the therapeutic wavelengths of light are being used. Don’t purchase one solely based on a low price point, as coloured bulbs are often used in counterfeit devices.”
THE POTENT ANTIOXIDANT
Laser treatments are among the most popular for achieving firmer skin, but antioxidants are a less drastic, and more affordable, way to delay the ageing process. “I always recommend using an additional dedicated antioxidant product in your beauty routine to neutralise the damage of daily life,” says Vyas.
For instant results, try L’Oréal Revitalift Laser Renew Cream SPF 20. The highly concentrated formula is inspired by laser treatments and includes beauty’s latest wonder ingredient: niacinamide. This smart antioxidant offers several benefits to stressed-out skin, from brightening pigmentation to controlling sebum production.
THE PLUMPING LIP TREATMENT
Fillers have become so popular, they’re now almost as de rigueur as having a facial. While dermal lip fillers should remain a specialist procedure, Vyas recommends a plumping mask to achieve a similar look at home.
“Using a hydrating balm throughout the day and wearing a lip treatment overnight can be effective in giving you a plumper pout,” says Vyas. “Opt for a mask that contains active peptides and botanical bio polymers to deliver and lock in intense hydration for a visibly fuller appearance.”
THE RESURFACING EXFOLIATOR
HydraFacials that include exfoliating acids are one of the most in-demand treatments due to their proven ability to resurface the skin, but you don’t need to leave your house to reap their benefits. “Active acids speed up skin cell turnover, stimulate collagen production and reveal naturally hydrated skin,” Vyas explains. “Using products that include acids as advised for your specific skin type will deliver a tweakment-worthy glow.”
L’Oréal Revitalift Laser Renew Ampoules are a great starting point. They deliver a dose of highly concentrated glycolic acid (a favourite peeling ingredient among dermatologists) to reveal resurfaced and clearer skin when used every night for one week.
THE HYALURONIC MOISTURE MASK
Hyaluronic acid is another key ingredient used in many cosmetic procedures, from dermal fillers to skin boosters – and with good reason. “Adding a hyaluronic acid product to your regime instantly hydrates and smooths the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, as it has the ability to bind one thousand times its weight in water,” explains Vyas.
As well as using a hyaluronic serum daily, Vyas recommends applying an intensive mask once a week for longer intervals, to improve the hydration, bounce and luminosity of your skin.
THE SKIN-DEFENDING SPF
Last but certainly not least is a reminder to protect your glow by applying sunscreen every day. L’Oréal Revitalift Laser Renew Cream includes SPF 20 to help block UV rays and protect the skin’s surface.
“UV rays are the primary cause of premature skin ageing, so don’t forget to top up your sunscreen regularly throughout the day,” says Vyas. “Wearing sunglasses in the summer months will also protect from repetitive squinting and the development of crow’s feet and frown lines.”
