Do you want a hydrated, more radiant complexion? With lockdown measures easing, social events with friends and family are back on the cards, so we want our skin to be looking its best.
But after months of being indoors enduring endless lockdowns, added stress and screen time and wearing face coverings have all played a part in leaving our skin a little dull and lacklustre.
The good news is there are simple changes you can make to better your skin. And of course, there are plenty of beauty products that can do wonders for dehydrated and dull complexions too.
Ahead Alice Henshaw, skin expert and owner of Harley Street Injectables, shares her radiance-boosting tips to help achieve a healthier, hydrated and glowing complexion ahead of summer. Get ready for the compliments!
1. Sunscreen is a must
Heliocare 360 Gel Oil-free SPF 50ml, £24.20, amazon.co.uk
While basking in the sun can be beneficial for vitamin D production, over-exposure can lead to serious health issues, including skin damage and, worse, skin cancer, so it’s essential to use protection daily.
‘Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen to prevent UVA and UVB skin damage every time you step out in the day,’ says Alice.
Alice explains how the sun can not only cause premature signs of ageing, but it can also dehydrate your skin, causing it to lose moisture and break down its elastin, which is responsible for skin strength and elasticity.
She adds: ‘This can cause premature signs of ageing. Try and find a broad spectrum such as Heliocare Oil Free gel SPF 50.’
2. Use a mask for an extra hit of hydration
Skincycles Silk Bio-cellulose Hydrating Mask, £80 for Box of 5, skincycles.com
For when your skin is crying out for extra care, the Skincycles Silk Bio-cellulose Hydrating Mask by Alice delivers a concentrated dose of skincare ingredients in a matter of minutes.
The luxurious and biodegradable bio-cellulose mask will help not only dehydrated skin, but it also targets fine lines and wrinkles, leaving the skin feeling plumped, hydrated and smoothed.
‘The mask contains Palmitoyl hexapeptide-12, which significantly increases collagen and hyaluronic acid in the skin,’ explains Alice. ‘Other antioxidants and active ingredients including Hyaluronic Acid, Blue Agave and Ruby Formosa help promote moisture, increase lifting and firming of the skin.’
With a face-hugging fit and plumping, glowing results, this mask is the ultimate skincare treat.
3. WATER, WATER, WATER
Alice also recommends drinking plenty of water to boost hydration inside and out.
‘Water is essential for keeping your body hydrated and functional, and it’s the same for your skin,’ says Alice.
‘The more water you consume, the more hydrated your skin will feel. This is because the skin’s barrier works better when it’s hydrated. I would recommend drinking two litres of water a day.’
4. Avoid hot showers
If your skin is dry and your scalp is flaky, chances are your shower is too hot. We hate to break it to you, but steaming hot showers strip away your skin’s moisture – so turn the heat down.
Alice says: ‘Many people consider lukewarm to be room temperature. Showering in hot water during the wintery months not only dries out the skin but also can damage the surface of the skin.
‘Extreme dry skin can develop into more serious conditions like skin inflammation and may even increase eczema.’
5. Injectable skin boosters

For those who are struggling to combat dull and lacklustre skin using skincare alone, Alice recommends injectable hydration using hyaluronic acid skin boosters.
‘Volite, an anti-ageing injectable treatment from Juvéderm – the makers of Botox – is a hyaluronic acid treatment that, unlike the typical dermal fillers, works on the condition of the skin,’ explains Alice.
Alternatively, Alice recommends The Profhilo treatment, which is made of injectable hyaluronic acid (much like a dermal filler) to improve skin quality and treat skin laxity.
She adds: ‘Profhilo is produced in a special way which means not only does it hydrate and act like scaffolding within the skin, it also triggers a response in the tissue known as ‘bioremodeling’ which smooths, tightens and gives your skin an inner glow.’
