Everything you need to know about the 5 minute nose job

What is the non-surgical nose job?

Officially called Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty, or Medical Rhinoplasty, this is an alternative to surgical nose jobs, which usually takes five minutes to perform and is ideal for those looking to alter the shape of their nose, whether that be to mask a dorsal hump, correct asymmetry deviation or lift and define the tip of the nose.

“The procedure is performed by injecting hyaluronic acid gel into strategic points of the nose to shorten and straighten. It can also be performed on patients that have had surgery in the past and are unhappy with their suboptimal results – which accounts for about 30 percent of my patients,” says Dr Yusra.

What to expect from the procedure

Pre-procedure, patients will undergo a consultation. “This is the most important part of the entire treatment journey,” says Dr Yusra, “it is the patient’s opportunity to discuss all their concerns and what they want to achieve. This is also where I understand the impact of their concerns psychosocially. Many of my patients tell me how their nose has caused them grief in the past, they may have even been bullied – which is sadly a very common picture. Others say their nose impacts their choice of hairstyle, whether or not they wear glasses and even where they sit at a dinner table.”

In this pre-assessment phase, Dr Yusra analyses the shape of a patient’s nose from a frontal and side view, and then determines whether this treatment is in fact suitable for them, while discussing all potential options available.

The treatment

Numbing cream (or topical anesthetic) is first lathered onto the treatment area, this allows the treatment to be painless or at most mildly uncomfortable. “When the treatment is well planned and in the hands of an experienced professional, the treatment is non-invasive and can be performed in five to ten minutes. It involves injections of hyaluronic acid gel along the bridge of the nose and the tip to straighten structural defects. The trick is knowing exactly where to place the little droplets to create anchors and never over-filling, thereby maintaining a delicate appearance.”

Dr Yusra’s ALR (Align, Lift and Refine) technique was developed to provide impeccable results. Using tiny microneedles, she causes as little trauma as possible by injecting strategically, first aligning and straightening the nose, then lifting a drooping tip before making any final refinements to asymmetry.

The dermal filler used is a synthetic hyaluronic acid gel. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring sugar molecule which is found in our tissues and is a molecule which easily absorbs water, making it hydrating. “Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers are used to revolumise and rehydrate where volume has been lost in the face, including the nose. The reason why I use this specific filler as opposed to permanent filler is because it is much safer. It integrates beautifully with our natural tissue, there is no reaction with the tissue as the body recognises it, and it can be dissolved in the unlikely event of complications or a patient not liking their results.”

When performing the treatment, Dr Yusra is especially aware of maintaining facial harmony and respecting a patient’s facial features. An astute clinician will always assess the nose to chin proportionality during the treatment to ensure the correct procedure is performed, she says. This is because where the chin is small, the nose can often appear bigger than it actually is, in this instance augmentation to other areas of the face, such as the chin or lips, may be suggested in order to create a balanced profile.
